Hi,
You have registered to the "Make your code more efficient" training that will occur on next Thursday and the Thursday after that in the morning. This e-mail is here to introduce you how it will be organized in practice.
First of all, the training will take place in building 200 of the IJCLab laboratory. Getting into the building requires key card, so you will need me to open the door. Please be at the main building gate at 8:50, where I will open up the door and guide everyone present to the room. If you arrive late, you can call me at this number: <téléphone>
.
For practicals, we will use two servers with all needed software preinstalled and special system tuning applied to ensure reasonable performance number reproducibility in spite of other participants concurrently using it. You can find more information, as well as usage suggestions, in this web page. The following login information is private to you: do not share it with others, and remember to erase it if you forward this e-mail to someone else!
- Server IP address:
<ip>
- User name: "
<user>
" (without quotes) - Password: "
<password>
" (without quotes)
When doing homework, or after the training, you may find out that you have unanswered questions. Please consider using this instant messaging channel as an alternative to sending me private e-mail, so that others can benefit from the discussion. Even though the underlying Mattermost platform is administered by CERN, they have a very open account creation policy that makes this chat usable by basically everyone, as you can see with the various options available on the right-hand side of the CERN SSO page.
You will find these links collected on the Indico event page for the first day of the training. Slides for day 1 are also already available there, but slides for day 2 will be uploaded later as they contain spoilers concerning the day 1 homework, which would ruin the fun of thinking about the problem on your own ;)
Here is what I want you to do before next Thursday:
- Check that you can access the practicals server, and do not hesitate to take some time to configure your SSH session to your liking.
- Make sure you can access the instant messaging channel, either with one of your existing accounts or a newly created guest CERN account.
- Report back anything that doesn't seem to work as expected, or anything you don't understand about this e-mail or the training's organization in general.
Cheers, Hadrien
J'ai dû le compléter plus tard par un mail complémentaire sur Mattermost, qu'il faudrait intégrer à la doc pour la prochaine édition:
Hi everyone,
As some of you noticed, you cannot just use the https://mattermost.web.cern.ch/infinites-computations/channels/efficient-code link to the instant messaging channel directly, you need to join the associated Mattermost team and channel first. Here's how you do it.
First, join the team using this link: https://mattermost.web.cern.ch/signup_user_complete/?id=trpqikb7bfb6iq3nk67pj7fsnw
Then click the "+" icon besides the "Infinites Computations" team name in the top-left corner, choose "Browse Channels", and join the "Efficient code" channel.
You only need to do this operation once, after that the link given above will take you directly to the discussion channel as expected.
Cheers, Hadrien
